Story:
We bought the car during the winter of 2001. It was in original condition with matching numbers and had never been restored.
It is a 72 pantera sold in California, imported to Sweden in the late 80's. It had a 351 cleveland with 4 bolt crank journals, open chamber HO-heads (high output) and Holley carburetter.
We did a thorough check upof the car and restored some components for example the stering rack witch had too mutch play and the master break cylinder. We even inspected the cars internal structure using fiber optics with the help of a company specializing in automotive rust treetment. We got the inspection for free because they tought the car was so cool.
We only found one rust spot on the car in one of the compartments below the driver door. This had been coused by a fabricational error of the forward facing rear splashshield witch had a smal gap that enabled dirt from the tiers to collect causing the rust.
The outer panel was removed and the damaged material was replaced with new hand crafted steel sheet. The work was made by the same company that did some restoration and a paintjob on one other Pantera namely that owned by the Swedish King Karl Gustaf the 16"th.
During the summer of 2001 we tested the car on both the drag strip of Tullinge raceway where the car ran 13.633 on the quarter mile and the race track Kinnekulle ring. I must say that the car performed very well on the track and was very fun to drive. It is a special feeling driving a mid engine car compared with the front engine Lotuses I had tried earlier (and those cars performes very well and are known for there great feel, like the Lotus Elan). The car was even shown on the "Sportbilens dag" meeting that year and raced on one street race where a Corvette C4 was beaten.
As autumn came the plans was drawn up for the car.
The car was supposed to be finiched late spring 2002 to partisipate in the first edition of "Highway challenge" (a Swedish version of the gumball 3000). Unfortunatly the car did not run until the summer of 2004 because in the autumn of 2001 I also began my studies at the Royal Institute of Technology.
The work was done on the car so that the car could be turn back to original specs without difficulty with all original parts labeld and stored. The car even has the original damping material in the engine bay left.
We get many questions why we replaced the cleveland with a BMW unit.
Because my Father have as long as I can remeber been in too small hitech engines like those in the Lotus cars. I myself have always felt that the Lotuses was a littel bit under powered and that is the main reson why we did not buy a Lotus Esprit instead of the Pantera. Well the latest version of the Esprit has a 3.5l V8 but sadly the transaxel is not strong enought if one would want to increase the power output of the Lotus engine. Compared with the transaxel in the pantera witch is derived from the GT40's winning LeMans.
And we had the BMW engine from a previus prodject so we thought why not.
The power outputs are almost the same but with the BMW engine we save over 100kg. The transient respons of the BMW engine is impressive, specially with the changes we have made to it. The fuel consumtion was also redused by ~30%. But when it comes to a car like this who cares about the fuel consumption, it's just a bonus.
